INTERVIEW WITH JOSE URQUIZA OF 3 YEARS HOLLOW

Jose Urquiza (vocals), Tony Reeves (guitar), Neil Kuhlman (guitar/vocals), Dex Digga (bass) and Chris Cushman (drums), make up the most promising and exciting new Active Rock/hard rock bands to come out of America’s Heartland in recent memory. The five band members based in the Quad Cities are more formally known as 3 Years Hollow (Kush Kills Clothing endorsers) and collectively they appear to be on the verge of breaking it big time on the national stage. The band has put together a top notch six-song EP Remember and has since completed a video for their first single “Chemical Ride”, a track that by the time you get halfway through your first listen has you hooked and begging for more. It is hard to argue the fact that the video has already enjoyed over 85,000 views on You Tube with little fanfare or promotion. Let’s just enjoy the ride known as 3 Years Hollow for ourselves here at Alternative Revolt.
Interview with Jose Urquiza:
Rick/AR: The band has been described as the love-child of Disturbed, Chevelle and Sevendust. I think that is an outstanding list of bands to be compared to, yet I hear a lot more melody and a more active radio rock vibe in your music then with any of those.
JU/TYH: Those three bands are three of my top vocal influences. They are the bands that got me into this style of music and are definitely an influence at least with my vocals. Our guitarist comes from an 80’s rock background, our drummer is more of a progressive guy with the Dream Theater, Rush type stuff. We come from everywhere as far as the influences for everybody. It is awesome as it’s what allows us to be in this genre, yet also sound different and a little new because of those influences. That’s what makes us have our own sound.
Rick/AR: How did the band come together originally? You are based in the Quad Cities area which is a fairly decent sized Midwest metropolitan, but not necessarily a hot bed for modern rock acts.
JU/TYH: Not a hot bed at all actually. (Laughs) There are probably a maximum of three hard rock bands in this area. Tony and I met each other through an ad at a local shop back when they still did that. We started writing and knew this was the kind of music we believed in and wanted to do. Along those lines we found other members from other bands in our same genre. We picked and it came together in this form of 3 Years Hollow now for about six years. We are all about 30 minutes away from each other in a big circle around here.
Rick/AR: Your newest effort is the 6-song musical offering EP; Remember, which was released this past March. Talk about the project and your musical hopes with this most recent offering.
JU/TYH: We had released a full-length album back in 2008 which was our very first recording as 3 Years Hollow. It was all self-released and self-recorded in a local studio here. It had been three years since we had put out any new music, so the whole goal of the project was to keep people interested in our music and let them know we are working behind the scenes developing ourselves and that we are still here. We did it with the intent of shopping it around, building a buzz and giving our fans some new music as well that had been supporting us the whole time.
Rick/AR: With the intent of shopping it around, is that why the project ended up as a six-song EP verses another full-length project?
JU/TYH: Right, we wanted to do six songs, we probably actually had 18-24 songs. We chose just the six that we thought best represented us with the goal of shopping it around and hopefully have somebody say they wanted a full-length and wanted to re-release it.
Rick/AR: I am one of those music fans who are always out looking for new music to rock to. I have to say, when I first checked out your band, by the time I got half-way into the chorus of your current single “Chemical Ride” I was hooked! A great driving rock song with a ridiculously killer beat that is almost impossible to get out of your head after you hear it.
JU/TYH: I appreciate that a lot man! (Laughs) That song was actually written with an acoustic guitar in my living room along with Tony. (Laughs) We knew we had something good when we wrote it. The chorus was actually written first and we went with the groove of the guitar and that came out. We just pieced the rest of it together from there. It was more the message of the song we knew we had something catchy with the vocal line, so we wanted to take that message and make sure it was just as powerful.
Rick/AR: Talk a little bit about the videos from a few of your songs you’ve worked on. You shot a formal video for “Chemical Ride” and now are in the process of doing something for another standout track on the EP; “Run Away”.
JU/TYH: Basically we met a local director to the area (Davo) who had recently worked with Mindset Evolution who is from an hour and a half south of us. They had won the Rockstar Up Roar battle of bands last year so they are on that tour this year. We play a lot of shows together. The director came in and loved the song and immediately had a vision of how someone could interpret the song. He pitched the idea to us. It was my first time acting and we threw it together! (Laughs) He is an amazing director which is why it turned out so well. With “Run Away”, it is not really a single selection, but we wanted to put something out to keep the fans excited. It is a more of a fan appreciation video. After we let “Chemical Ride” do its’ thing, we figure we will release a second un-official single and shoot another video in a couple of months.
Rick/AR: Inside the cover of your EP, you have put a QR Code that will allow fans to actually scan the code with their phone which directs them to view the video. What a great concept to further promote the song.
JU/TYH: That is it! Our band is very fortunate. We have a lot of people who believe in us and want to see us succeed. We’ve got a marketing company who’s a friend I graduated High School with. He is all into that stuff and knew exactly what to do with that. He does all of our flyers, graphics designs and came up with the logo. We’ve got that starter marketing team at least behind us.
Rick/AR: Staying in the theme of modern technology that is available with all of the You Tube, social sites, etc. Has embracing this helped you as an independent band to broaden your fan base? In looking at similar comments on a video place such as You Tube, I see several comments from fans in varying countries saying the same thing about the song and the video for it.
JU/TYH: It helps become more noticed across the world. We have fans that have contacted us from Africa and South America and we can pretty much put our music worldwide and the viral take-off. This is what allowed “Chemical Ride” for example, to go over 85,000 views and we really haven’t done much, but share it on Facebook and it has already taken us across the world. It is an unbelievable feeling of gratitude. Every time we see a comment like that I try to remind myself this is the dream to make music you can reach people with. It doesn’t matter if there isn’t really money coming in with it when you see it impacting people like that. We think we have the plan, the package and we are ready. It is just doing it the only way we know how.
Rick/AR: The obvious as you said, that the band has been active as you have been out also playing alongside the likes of Chevelle, Puddle of Mudd, Pop Evil, Downplay, Charm City Devils, Rains, Saliva and 12 Stones already. You are also now making a drive to be part of the 2013 Rockstar Energy Drive UPROAR Festival.
JU/TYH: We live in an area where few rock shows come through that are the kind of genre that we play. We’ve got some clubs here that really support us and help put us on stage in front of as many people as possible. So when those shows come around we are the guys they go to. Thankfully we are able to do that and make new fans every time. That is what has led us to get on the UPROAR battle and those fans have been behind us every step of the way. Playing with Chevelle was a personal favorite for me I will always remember too!
Rick/AR: You aren’t letting a lot of water pass under the bridge as you are already working on new material again as we speak.
JU/TYH: We don’t want to sit around and wait; we just keep pumping music out there for the fans until somebody sees these guys might be worth a shot, so we will see what happens.
Rick/AR: In your perfect world what would be the most ideal tour package you could hit the road with if you had your choice?
JU/TYH: That is a grand question, oh man. (Laughs) Definitely it would be Sevendust and Three Days Grace as we would mesh well with them along with someone like Papa Roach.
Rick/AR: What is in store for the remainder of the year?
JU/TYH: We recently got together and co-wrote some songs with Clint Lowrey of Sevendust. We are going to put those together and there is some interest in him producing them. If something doesn’t come along to put out a full-length project, we will either put out another 6-song EP or maybe a double disk with both EPs.
Rick/AR: That sounds very promising. How did the band hook up with Clint Lowrey?
JU/TYH: We played a couple of shows with Eye Empire which his brother Corey is a member of. Corey liked what he saw, so he gave Clint’s information to our manager and they set it up from there.
Rick/AR: Jose, thank you for hanging out with us today. Is there anything you would like to add?
JU/TYH: I think we really got to the core of what we are trying to do here. We are ready to prove ourselves to the fans. I really appreciate it!

ANDREW WK’S ‘HARRY HARD – PARTY HARD’ SHIRT

In the past few years, Andrew W.K., the American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, entertainer, motivational speaker, and music producer had a very successful run with doing parody shirts of celebrities and characters with bloody noses and ‘party hard’ underneath the image.
He announced a new one: the controversial Black t-shirt with Prince Harry and “Party Hard” printed in white and red inks.
The super limited edition party shirt features the ultimate party Prince with Andrew’s classic bloody nose design. Once these limited few shirts run out, they won’t be reprinted ever again.
Andrew is perhaps best known for the 2001 hit single ‘Party Hard’, from the album ‘I Get Wet’.

Nike Olympic ‘Gold Digging’ Shirt Stirs Controversy

NIKE is in hot water over a new Olympics t-shirt they’ve released, especially since it’s only being offered for women.
The plain black shirt boldly states “Gold Digger” across the chest. The product was intended to reference aspiring to win an Olympic gold medal, but some Facebook and Twitter users would beg to differ.
“Sort of undermines the strong woman image Nike has spent $$ to market,” said one Twitter user.
“Whoever thought a Nike t’shirt emblazoned with ‘GOLD DIGGING’ was a fitting tribute to female Olympians shuld be fired,” said another.
Even the product description on WorldSoccerShop.com acknowledges the underlying tone behind the slogan. “We aren’t saying they’re gold diggers – we’re just saying they’re out for the gold! What’s wrong with that?”
Nike stands by the shirt. In a statement released to ABC News, the company said: “Nike has consistently supported female athletes and the position they enjoy as positive role models. The t-shirt uses a phrase in an ironic way that is relevant given it was released just as the world focused on the success of female athletes.”
But they’re not the only sports brand to stir the pot with controversial products. In June, Adidas decided to cancel their plans to release the “Shackle” shoe that critics said evoked slavery.
The shoe adorned with rubber fasteners was canceled after an image posted on the Adidas Originals Facebook page ignited a firestorm of controversy. The photo of the shoes, dubbed JS Roundhouse Mids by the company, was captioned, “Tighten up your style with the JS Roundhouse Mids dropping in August. Got a sneaker game so hot you lock your kicks to your ankles?”
Critics, including the Rev. Jesse Jackson, called the $350 shoe racist and intensive, saying it evokes the era of slavery.

Controversial T-Shirt Sold at Penn State

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The recent sanctions against Penn State University and its football program have left many people upset and some have decided to take their frustrations out on the NCAA.
The Student Bookstore, an independent Penn State store just off campus, is selling t-shirts dubbed the “NCAA Overstepping” shirt.
What has caught people’s attention is that the front of the shirt reads: “NCAA National Communist Athletic Association,” with the “C” designed to look like the Communist symbol.
The back of the shirt adds to that with “Overstepping Their Bounds And Punishing The Innocent.”
According to the Student Bookstore, the shirts have been on sale at the store and on its website for a few weeks. However, they recently caught the attention of many after Onward State, an independent student-run Penn State blog, posted a photo of the shirt on its Twitter and Facebook accounts.
The shirts come in the wake of the sanctions imposed by the NCAA in light of the Jerry Sandusky child abuse case. On July 23, the NCAA hit Penn State with a $60 million fine, a four-year football postseason ban and a vacation of all wins dating back to 1998.
The Student Bookstore is not affiliated with Penn State University.

T-shirts made from guns

Thousands of guns are seized in the UK every year.
T
Most are destroyed by police, but a new project in the north of England, Guns to Goods, is trying to put them to good use.
The idea is to melt the guns down to make metal tags for T-shirts and also create artworks to be sold to the public.
The profits will be invested in schemes to try to keep young people out of gangs.

Scorned Embrace join the family

Kush Kills have welcomed Arisonian metalcore band Scorned Embrace to our ever expanding family of sponsors.

Scorned Embrace began in the summer of 2007 with one goal in mind: to push the boundaries of metalcore. The five piece group featuring Mike Clark (vocals), Elliott Flanagan (guitar), Logan Matti (drums), Mike Hendrix (Drix, bass), and Josh Williams (guitar), takes inspiration from bands like Parkway Drive, Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, and Unearth.

Scorned embrace blends these influences to produce music riddled with crushing breakdowns, intricate syncopated riffs, and melodies that will be stuck in your head for weeks. Combined with an energy infused live show full of humorous antics, the band forms a crisp new metalcore experience unique to the Tucson local music scene.

'Jesus' T-shirt student taken out of school

A Nova Scotia student suspended from classes for five days for wearing a T-shirt with the slogan "Life Is Wasted Without Jesus" returned to school wearing the same garment, but he was quickly taken home by his father.
William Swinimer, who's in Grade 12, was scheduled to attend a session for all students on how to express their beliefs in a way that is respectful to all.
But John Swinimer said he wants Forest Heights Community School in Chester Basin, Lunenburg County, to only teach the basic courses, leaving religion out of it.

"He will not attend this school unless they are having reading, writing and arithmetic — good old-fashioned academics," he said, waving a New Testament bible. "When they're having forums, when they're having other extra-curricular activity, he will not attend that school."
Students said William Swinimer has been preaching and making them feel uncomfortable, and the shirt was the last straw so they complained.
"He's told kids they'll burn in hell if they don't confess themselves to Jesus," student Riley Gibb-Smith said.
Katelyn Hiltz, student council vice-president, agreed the controversy didn't begin with the T-shirt.
"It started with him preaching his religion to kids and then telling them to go to hell. A lot of kids don't want to deal with this anymore," she said.
Hiltz said she supported the school's decision to suspend Swinimer for continuing to wear the T-shirt.
Experts from the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission, the departments of education and justice, and guidance counsellors are at the school to conduct voluntary sessions so students can discuss the issue of religious tolerance.
Swinimer wore the T-shirt every day to class for several weeks, even after the principal told him repeatedly to stop wearing it, before he was suspended.

What was Topman thinking?

How can T shirts as offensive as these be sold by one of Britain's biggest mainstream stores?

As anyone who's run into a full-flowing stag or hen party will know, slogan T-shirts aren't exactly known for their tact and subtlety ("all you can eat", with a fluorescent arrow pointing crotchwards, must be the nadir). But even by those low standards, the two Topman T-shirts that have today kicked up an internet storm pretty much take the breath away. One, in grey marl, reads "Nice New Girlfriend: What Breed Is She?"; while the other, in violent pillarbox-red, lists a series of excuses for an apparent act of domestic violence, including "You provoked me" and "I was drunk".
A campaign against the blatant sexism began on Twitter, where it was picked up by Tender, a London-based charity that works with young people to tackle the causes of domestic violence. They set up a JustGiving campaign, asking people to donate towards their valuable work instead of buying the shirts; and a Facebook group, sTopman, with the aim of raising awareness and ultimately asking Topman to withdraw the T-shirts from sale. The group quickly picked up 332 members before, just a few hours after the backlash began, Topman announced their decision to stop selling the T-shirts.
A spokeswoman said in a statement: "We have received some negative feedback regarding two of our printed T-shirts. While we would like to stress that these T-shirts were meant to be lighthearted and carried no serious meaning, we have made the decision to remove these (sic) from store and on-line as soon as possible. We would like to apologise to those who may have been offended by these designs."
But how on earth can T-shirts as offensive as these have been designed, manufactured and sold by one of Britain's biggest and most mainstream stores? Unfortunately, the store has refused to expand on the statement, to say when T-shirts first went on sale or how many have been sold.
Doireann Larkin, campaigns manager at Tender, is all too familiar with the sentiments expressed by both shirts. "The 'I'm so sorry' T-shirt," she says, "reflects exactly the kinds of excuses used by perpetrators of domestic violence and their friends – they say, 'maybe the girl nagged him', or 'maybe she'd been cheating'. And as for the 'breed' shirt – that's a classic case of objectifying women; of comparing women to dogs." And there was Topman thinking this could be fashionable.

Trayvon Martin protest T-shirts

Concerned citizens have taken to blogs, Twitter and Facebook to post their concerns about the case of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed teenager slain by a neighborhood watch captain in a Florida townhouse development.

They have also, famously, posted them on their backs.

The Trayvon Martin protest T-shirt has become a staple at rallies across the country, and it's difficult to think of another item of clothing more representative of the nation's twitchy zeitgeist in April 2012. Sometimes it seems as though the old-fashioned medium of cotton has done as much as the Internet to spread the memes associated with the tragedy through the country -- and the world.

Some riff on the imagery of Skittles (the snack Martin was bringing home from a convenience store on the night of his shooting), or decry the perceived persecution of people (such as Martin) who wear hoodie sweatshirts. Others, perhaps borrowing from last year's failed campaign to spare the life of Georgia death-row inmate Troy Davis, simply proclaim, "I am Trayvon."

Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, is seeking to trademark the "I am Trayvon" phrase, along with the phrase "Justice for Trayvon." Meanwhile, a mix of outrage and the entrepreneurial spirit is fueling numerous variants.

The Miami Herald reports that a man named Joseph McCollum was selling a shirt at a Sunday protest with Trayvon's face inside the 2008 Obama campaign logo, featuring the president's comment about the case:

"If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon."

On the Web, the company redbubble.com sells a hoodie with a version of a "Neighborhood Watch" sign, which warns, darkly, "WE IMMEDIATELY MURDER ALL SUSPICIOUS PERSONS."

Over at shirtscope.com, $14.95 buys you a simple design with a simple math-inspired statement: "HOODIE (does not equal) HOODLUM."

An EBay vendor named phototshirts1002012 offers a design featuring a likeness of the shooter, George Zimmerman, who has not been charged with a crime, due to Florida's controversial "stand your ground" law.

The shirt reads: 'STAND YOUR GROUND in the PENITENTIARY."

The Smoking Gun website, meanwhile, reports on the existence of a T-shirt with Zimmerman's image paired with the word "cracker" -- along with a couple of demeaning expletives, in an apparent reference to a song by the rapper Plies.

Zimmerman's mother is Peruvian. The Smoking Gun notes, wryly, that the shirt-makers, if nothing else, are "[e]xpanding the definition of 'cracker,'" a term usually reserved for non-Latino whites.

Not to be outdone, an EBay seller named zissou23 offers a black T-shirt with a big image of a handgun and the phrase: "I AM ZIMMERMAN." Smaller text proclaims: "STAND YOUR GROUND."
